1965 : Porsche 904/6 - nº32

The Porsche 904/6 001 was one of four prototypes entered by the factory: one eight-cylinder and three six-cylinder. Originally, the 904 was to be equipped with the six-cylinder engine of the 911, but the need to produce 100 examples before the end of April 1964 for homologation in GT at the 24 Hours of Le Mans , as well as the slower start of production of the 911, had initially forced Porsche engineers to fit a four-cylinder in the 904.
This "engine transplant" from the 911 was finally carried out for the 1965 season , declining it into a version called 904/6. Entrusted to the German duo Herbert Linge / Peter Nöcker, the Porsche prototype qualified in 22nd position with a time of 4'03''1.

Having started cautiously, the factory Porsche held a formidable 6th place at the halfway point. Taking advantage of the P2 Ferraris ' retirements in the final hours, it moved into 4th place with three hours remaining in the race, a position it held until the checkered flag.
